The prevalence of multiple readings of the Quran among Muslims is an undeniable fact: Are these revealed by God, or are they the product of interference and manipulation by the "Qurrae"? There is no doubt that the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) signed the readings that were common among the people, but the question is whether this signing was out of sympathy or because they considered them to be revealed by God? This article claims that the Shiite jurists' understanding of the tenets of the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) has always been that the repetition of the readings that are common among Muslims goes back to the Messenger of God (s.a.w.), and if they had any debate, it was only about how many of them were so repeated. However, from the 11th century, a mentality became prevalent that the Quran was revealed with only one reading. This mentality not only created new challenges in Shiite jurisprudence, but also paved the way for the claim of distortion of the Quran! Using the method of historical analysis, this article first traces the positions of Shiite jurists from the era of the infallible Imams (a.s.) to the tenth century in order to obtain a correct understanding of the doctrine of the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.), and then explains how the page was turned from the eleventh century and how some of the negative theoretical and jurisprudential problems are resolved by returning to a correct understanding of the doctrine of the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.).
