Abstract
The doctrine of "special knowledge of the Imams" is one of the fundamental beliefs of Imamiyya and has consistently faced criticism and accusations from opponents since the emergence of Shīʿism. Among the most significant accusations is the claim that this belief emerged only in the second and third centuries AH or was derived from non-Islamic ideas. Although some studies have responded to these claims, most have adopted a theological and apologetic approach and therefore cannot adequately address historically based accusations aimed at undermining the identity of Shīʿī doctrines. This study employs a historical-theological method and an analytical-critical approach to examine the roots and historical authenticity of the doctrine of the Imams' special knowledge in the first century AH. To this end, Qur'anic evidence, the Prophetic Sunnah, the traditions of the Ahl al-Bayt, and historical reports are analyzed. The findings demonstrate that the core of this doctrine, regardless of its scope and manifestations, is rooted in the Qur'an and the Prophetic Sunnah. They further show that, in the first century AH, it was present not only in the sayings and conduct of the Infallible Imams but also in the beliefs of their companions and followers. Accordingly, the claim that this doctrine emerged in later centuries or was borrowed from Jewish and Christian thought lacks historical and scholarly support. The study concludes that the doctrine of the Imams' special knowledge in Imāmī thought originates from authentic Islamic teachings and possesses a valid historical identity in the first century AH.
