A Intertextual Reading of the Verbal and Visual Elements of the Karbala Event in the Works of Visual Artists of the First Generation of the Revolution

Abstract
Religious illustration underwent a new phase starting in the 1970s, particularly following the victory of the Islamic Revolution. Illustrators sought to reflect the bravery of martyrs in the face of the oppressors by utilizing familiar signs and symbols from the verbal narratives of the Karbala event, aligning them with the visual elements in their works. In doing so, they established a form of intertextuality between verbal and visual texts. However, due to the differing semiotic systems of text and image, the relationship between the two was not always based on direct adaptation. Other branches of transtextuality, such as hypertextuality and architextuality, also emerged in the analysis of these works.
The aim of this study is to explain the presence of verbal and visual components of the Karbala event in the works of first-generation revolutionary illustrators, using the approach of Gérard Genette, the French structuralist philosopher. The main research question is: How did first-generation revolutionary visual artists use the Karbala event as a pretext in their works?
This qualitative research, based on library sources and visual analysis of artworks, concludes that by focusing on Genette’s theory of transtextuality — specifically intertextuality, hypertextuality, and architextuality — we can gain comprehensive insights into how past texts have influenced the creation of new texts, particularly through the depiction of Karbala-related themes in the works of first-generation revolutionary illustrators. Moreover, the findings show that the combination of historical and religious elements with the artistic methods employed by these illustrators has resulted in rich, meaningful artworks that continue to resonate with their audiences.
